[01]The challenge
Small teams run projects across chat threads, spreadsheets and a tracker nobody keeps current. By the time the weekly check-in starts, half the board is already out of date.
The tools they tested were either designed for massive organizations or lacked the two essential features they consistently requested: real-time updates visible to everyone and a transparent log tracking individual contributions.
[02]Our approach
- 01
We started from the change, not the screen. Every move, edit and comment is written once, stored in the ticket’s history and broadcast to everyone viewing that board.
- 02
The API came first, with typed request and response models, so the board, the list view and notifications all read from one contract.
- 03
Roles were settled before the first screen: owners manage boards and members, members move and discuss the work.
[03]The solution
Boardly pairs a Next.js front end with a FastAPI and PostgreSQL back end. Boards update live over WebSockets, so a card dragged on one screen moves on every other open screen within a second.
Each ticket carries its comments, watchers and a full audit history. Watchers are notified about the changes they care about, and the list view filters, sorts and searches across every board.
